


Mill scale is molded on the outer surfaces of billets when they are being manufactured in rolling mills. It consists of a mixture of iron oxides and is typically dark in color. It is commonly less than 0.1 mm and primarily adheres to the steel surface and protects it from environmental erosion to avoid any damage. Mill scale consists primarily of magnetite, Fe₃O₄.
